Mission

The mission of the Chesapeake Health Education Program (CHEP), Inc., is to promote quality continuing education for health care professionals and to develop educational and transitional housing programs for disabled homeless veterans. Our focus is on:

  • Accredited continuing education programs in the Maryland area
  • National conferences across the country
  • Transitional housing for disabled homeless military veterans.

Overview

The Chesapeake health Education Program is a 501 (C) 3 non-profit corporation established in 1990. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and a Revocable License between the Corporation and the VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) allows a close but separate working relationship with the Department of Veterans Affairs to accomplish staff education and the sharing of educational resources.

CHEP is located at the Perry Point Campus of the VA Maryland Health Care System and provides accredited continuing education programs for health care professionals, maintains strong partnerships with a variety of community groups, offers a strong dental education curriculum, conducts workplace safety training, and customizes programs to fit local and client needs. CHEP conducts approximately 120 programs in the Maryland area and 20 national conferences to over 15,000 health care professionals each year.

As part of the ongoing relationship with the VA Maryland Health Care System, CHEP is committed to bring homeless veterans off the streets and into safe, caring environments. Through the administration and sponsorship of grants, training programs and housing, CHEP is continuously working to break the cycle of homelessness for those men and women who once wore the military uniforms of this country. To this end, CHEP manages housing properties in Charleston, South Carolina (40 beds), Washington, D.C. (26 beds), and five houses (15 beds) in Perry Point, Maryland.

A Board of Directors representing a range of community health care organizations govern the non-profit corporation. All members share resources and are committed to achieving the goals established in the original corporate charter. In addition to the Board of Directors, the corporation employs a Chief Executive Officer who provides oversight of long range planning as well as a Chief Operations Officer who manages the day to day activities of the corporation. The corporation currently employs fifteen full-time staff to maintain its core educational and transitional housing functions.
