Protocol Development and Evidence Based Outcomes: Conceptualization to Application
Wednesday, October 29, 2008

This workshop will incorporate a brief historical account of the competition for health care dollars and the push to evidence-based practice in medicine and how it affects clinical practice across disciplines. The presentation will include information from the World Health Organization (WHO) that has developed a unified and standard language which provides descriptions of health and health-related states. The WHO language is focused on what individuals can do or not do in their current health state, rather than on diagnoses, and is integrated into an international code for functioning (ICF). From this background the presenters will provide practical approaches to the conceptualization and implementation of evidence-based functional outcomes that are compatible with the current demands for payment in health care. This session will provide information that can help recreational, music and other creative arts therapists work in current and coming bureaucratic, healthcare environments. Information critical to assessment, conceptualizing interventions that meet needs identified through assessment, programming that leads to functional abilities in community life outside therapy, measures for evidence-based outcomes that demonstrate interventions are successful, and the conceptualization of these outcomes as functional are central to this workshop.

Learning Objectives:

Explain how to develop a protocol.
Discuss how to identify appropriate assessment information and use it to guide individualized program development.
Explain the need for evidence-based functional outcomes and their relationship to community integration.
