This comprehensive workshop in clinical suicidology will explore outpatient-oriented clinical work with suicidal patients. Topic areas covered in this workshop will include: the epidemiology of suicide, theoretical approaches, cutting-edge clinical research, training in differential assessments of suicidality, training in differential treatments of suicidal states (e.g., acute vs. chronic risk), ethical considerations, suggestions for protecting oneself from malpractice liability, and countertransference considerations. The presenter will provide an empirically-based assessment and treatment approach— developed from 18 years of on-going clinical research. Various contemporary issues (e.g., HIPAA, managed care, the role of hospitalization, medications, and the common and inappropriate use of ''safety contracts'') will be discussed and explored throughout the workshop.
