Psychological Wellness and Self-Care as an Ethical Imperative
Thursday, May 27, 2010

Being a health care professional brings with it a number of challenges and demands that interact with our personal characteristics and life stressors to result in feelings of distress. If not adequately addressed this leads to burnout and eventually results in impaired professional competence. As highlighted in the ethics codes of various health professions engaging in ongoing self-care to achieve psychological wellness is an ethical imperative. The relevant literature is reviewed, highlighting lessons learned. Strategies for prevention of burnout and impairment and steps to take when distress is present are provided. The roles of self-awareness, the use of positive career-sustaining behaviors, and the avoidance of maladaptive coping patterns are reviewed. Recommendations are provided for practical strategies to implement now that will benefit all health care professionals, and as a result, those they serve.

Learning Objectives:

Identify the stressors in their personal and professional lives that may contribute to burnout
Explain the warning signs of burnout and preventive strategies to take to avoid it.
